Tihany

Balaton, the largest shallow lake in Central Europe, was formed by tectonic sagging around 25,000 years ago. Tihanyi-félsziget (Tihany peninsula) divides the lake into two basins. The characteristic view of the Mediterranean landscape was formed by volcanic eruptions millions of year ago as shown today by two giant calderas.

Balatonfüred

Baltonfüred is a small town with 13.500 inhabitants, on the north shore of Lake Balaton, sorrounded by gently sloping hillocks. Foreign travellers – may they come here by rail, by road or by boat – start to feel the harmonious blend of past and present at the moment of their arrival. First and foremost the location of the town captures everyone: tender mountains on the north, the beautiful lake on the south embrace the town, which radiates that special Transdanubian serenity for ages.

Hiking

Tihany Peninsula is like a landscape model: it features various landmarks but at a smaller scale. There is no volcano but there is a lake filling remains of a crater. There is no geyser but there are geyserite cones. There is no sea here and yet pine trees and cicadas imitate an environment typical of Mediterranean seaside.
